Yep I said it, “Shut the f up!”
Haven’t you ever said that to the negative committee in your head? I know I have!
Man, if I had a dime for every time I wanted to (or did) scream at my committee, I’d be a very wealthy woman relaxing on the beach in some tropical destination. They are a royal pain in my backside!! And while I may never totally get rid of “the committee”, I’ve found ways to quiet their negative squawking. Ways that I will gladly share with you.
BUT there’s a caveat…
These are ways that work for me. If they don’t look or feel like ways that will work for you, don’t take them with you (OR feel free to tweak them to your liking).
GAGGING THE COMMITTEE
Gag #1: I’d like to think that my committee is made up of a bunch of little voices….little, itty, bitty tiny voices that need one another in order to be heard. (Because on their own, their voices are too weak to be heard.) I liken them to a frightened child who is trying hard to voice their fear and insecurity. The last thing that child needs is someone reacting to their fear and insecurity by screaming bloody murder at it. (Even though I may want to). This is my reminder to respond. So instead of saying “Shut the f up!” as I’ve done in the past, I say, “I got this. We’re cool!” because I do “got this and we are cool.”
Gag #2: Gloria Steinem once said, “The truth will set you free, but first it will piss you off.” Nothing quiets my committee faster than the truth so here are some truth-provoking questions to ask:
- What do I know to be the truth about ______________ (my feelings, this thought, situation, etc)?
- What am I avoiding?
- What do I CHOOSE to believe?
- What are my options?
Creating awareness is a great way to reclaim my personal power from my committee!
Gag # 3: Focused deep breathing! It’s hard for me to hear my committee when I’m focusing on my breathing. A deep breath in through my nose and a loud exhale out of my mouth….”Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaah”
Gag #4: Listen to my soul sistah, because my soul sistah would never talk nasty to me. (Which really just means finding an alternative thought or thing to say to myself.) For example…
If I make a mistake my committee may say something along the lines of,”Smooth move dingbat! Could you have made a bigger mess?” Enter my soul sistah who will say something like, “Hey girlfriend, not to worry. Things happen. The cool thing is you get to learn from this thing…so what did you learn?”
If I want to try something new, maybe step outside my comfy, cozy zone my committee might say, “Oh no! You don’t want to do that! You don’t have what it takes so you’ll be disappointed.” BUT my soul sistah will say, “You got this!! Besides you’ve got more to gain than you do to lose by doing this!! Go for it!”
Did you know that we can rewire our brains? If we can stop the negative really quickly and replace it with something more positive, we do just that. Buh-Buh bye committee!
Gag #5: Meditate. I’m not very consistent (as in every day) with it just yet, but when I do meditate the committee is quiet as all get out! And they aren’t just quiet during meditation but throughout the entire day.
Gag #6: Journaling has been my go to for my committee to get up and go. Writing at least three pages a day is a huge help in shifting the energy so that my committee doesn’t have a negative playground to play in.
Gag #7: Self care, self care, self care. Even if I just take 10 minutes to rest and relax, it’s a huge help!! You see, negative committees need lack of energy, tired and fried in order to thrive!! Self care prevents the tired and fried!
So there you have it, my tried and true gags! I hope that they're of help to you or if nothing else, trigger some of your own gags. With that my lovelies, I’m off but before I go here’s a question for you…
What will you do to gag your committee?
As always, I’m sending much love and light your way!!
