Each year it’s become my “ritual” that instead of creating New Year’s resolutions that only ever see the inside of my sock drawer, I pick a word. One word that lights me up, and that I can use as theme for the entire year.
Last year with great enthusiasm I carefully considered and tried a few words on for size until the right word made it’s way to the front of the line. My word was INSPIRE. 2015 was to be my year of doing things that inspired me and in turn others.
It began with my commitment to saying “good bye” to some old habits and resigning from a position that I held for many years. I was jazzed and knew for sure that 2015 was going to be stellar. How could it not be since I was creating space for all the inspiration to come flooding in?!
The truth is, while I was ready for stellar, not to mention ready to inspire and be inspired, that’s not what happened.
Yes, there were moments when I was inspired and when I did inspire, but those moments felt overshadowed by fear and lack. I underestimated how I was going to feel letting go of things that no longer served me… so instead of shifting into stellar, inspired mode, I shifted into maintenance mode.
Clearly I needed to be in maintenance mode and in hindsight, I’m glad I was. I needed to be in that mode to prove to myself that I could keep what was (and still is) important to me going… even though there was a pretty big transition taking place.
So as I end 2015, the Year of Maintenance, I’m ready to begin 2016 the Year of Mission Thrive. (Yep, you guessed it; my word for 2016 is “Thrive”.) With Thrive as my sidekick, I’m promising myself to do things that support my theme. Unlike last year, I’ve made a small list of things that I’m committed to doing to support my thriving.
My friends, now it’s your turn. What word will you choose to serve as your theme for 2016? What actions are you willing to take to support your theme? (Please share in the comment section below.)
Here’s to an amazing 2016!!
With much love and light...
